Better stand tall when they’re calling you out. Don’t bend, don’t break baby, don’t back down.
BY FAR THE MOST INTERESTING GAME THIS YEAR…
Two unbeaten football teams… playing each other! The novelty!
APPARENTLY THERE IS SOME SORT OF RIVALRY…
Remember last year when Graziani’s shoulder was separated? And then ESPN played the clip from every conceivable angle five times a game? And what Graziani sounded like when getting blindsided (kind of like a cow being buried under sacks of government-subsidized potatoes)?
DID WE MENTION THESE TEAMS ARE BOTH UNBEATEN?
This is kind of a selling point to snag some viewers tonight (8pm E, ESPN2/ESPN360.com)!
POINT/COUNTERPOINT AFTER THE JUMP!
Even though TC is currently in rehearsal!
J SAYS: Perfection in football that doesn’t require referencing the ’72 Dolphins? Sign me up. There’s a long history of hatred between the cities of Brotherly Love and Book Depositories; combine that with celebrity owners on both sidelines and two legitimately talented football teams, this has all the fixin’s of a great game of arenaball. Each team has a talented QB and more-than-reliable backup (Dr. D, meet Tony G, Colonel Sanders, meet Brokeback Matt), a pair of deadly WR targets (Pettis/Nash and Jackson/Brackins), and defensive stalwarts [DON’T FORGET TO ADD SOME NAMES OF GUYS ON DEFENSE]. Both Dallas and Philly have had their share of ‘quality’ and ‘close’ wins versus some of the league’s best (New Orleans, Chicago) and some of the league’s worst (LA, Utah). It appears to be anyone’s game. Right, TC?
TC: To be thus is nothing;
But to be safely thus. Our fears in Banquo
Stick deep; and in his royalty of nature
Reigns that which would be fear’d: ’tis much he dares;
And, to that dauntless temper of his mind,
He hath a wisdom that doth guide his valour
To act in safety. There is none but he
Whose being I do fear: and, under him,
My Genius is rebuk’d; as, it is said,
Mark Antony’s was by Caesar.
THE BOTTOM LINE: (JM) D’Orazio may need to start for Philly, but he’s a seasoned veteran. Regardless of who’s under center, Dallas needs to come out strong after their bye week and disrupt a pair of NFL-caliber (and sized) receivers. On defense, Philly can’t make any errors that could give Dallas an early lead. Given the talent and completeness of each team, this could be a rare defensive AFL battle. (TC) See, in those days there was personality in it, Howard. There was respect, and comradeship, and gratitude in it. Today, it’s all cut and dried and there’s no chance for bringing friendship to bear—or personality. You see what I mean? They don’t know me any more!
JM’s PREDICTION: Nail-biter, but edge to Philly with the home field advantage. Philly 54, Dallas 51.
TC’s PREDICTION: Gentlemen, progress has never been a bargain. You’ve got to pay for it. Sometimes I think there’s a man behind a counter who says, “All right, you can have a telephone; but you’ll have to give up privacy, the charm of distance. Madam, you may vote; but at a price; you lose the right to retreat behind a powderpuff or a petticoat. Mister, you may conquer the air; but the birds will lose their wonder, and the clouds will smell of gasoline!”
